Artist Spotlight: Claude Fauchère

Perusing some local shops in Bethesda, I came across a lovely woman named Maria who was carting around a painting she had previously purchased.  I am still not sure why she was carrying it from store to store, but I am sure glad she was because it was magnificent.  I saw it first thing as I walked in the door and immediately asked her who it was and where it had been purchased.  She explained that she had bought it years ago from a local gallery that had since closed, but she would be happy to send me some information via email.  I was refreshed by her kindness as it wasn't the trend that day and gladly handed over my contact information.  She emailed me saying that the artist was Claude Fauchère and the name of the painting was "Couleurs de France" ... Drum roll please... (Click to enlarge)

It is brilliant.  Simply brilliant.  As I uncover more work by Claude Fauchère,  my amazement grows.  It is honestly like nothing I've ever seen before and I think I will die if I don't own a Fauchère of my own to ogle every morning and evening.  Sigh.  Here are some of my other favorites.  (Images courtesy of J.Todd Galleries - check out the site to see more)

Thank you, Miss Maria for your kindness and for opening my eyes to such a talent.  And thank you, Claude, for your vision.  It is truly magnificent.

Trend: Birds of a Feather

We have finally returned from our federal sojourn and I am exhausted.  I was not able to do and see nearly all the things I had wished, but I was pleased to get away and even more pleased to be home again.  I have much cleaning and catching up to do, but I'm having a veritable traffic jam of inspiration in my head and I need to get some of it out!  I have resolved to begin blogging everyday starting right meow.

Although I didn't make it to as many stores, galleries, and boutiques as I would have liked, I did make it in a couple (Yves Delorme, Pierre Deux, The Kellogg Collection, to name a few).  While browsing through these uppity establishments, I noticed a reoccurring trend: birds.  There were bird statuettes, bird dishware, bird candles and loads of other avian accessories.  I wasn't able to take any pictures for various reasons, but I have scoured my favorite retail establishments to find some of my favorites.

These little gems are from one of my favorite online retailers, Stray Dog Designs.  They have such beautiful and unique objects and accessories and what's better, they donate a portion of their profits to help hungry children, homeless families, and, of course, stray dogs.  I would love to buy both of these winged beauties and put them next to each other on the bureau or console as part of a stunning tableau vivant.

One of my favorite bird accessories came from a Bethesda, MD store called The Kellogg Collection.  They were small, plump cement statuettes and I thought them so sweet and sculptural perched on a stack of books.  I wasn't able to find them on The Kellogg Collection website, but did find these yellow beauties - they have just the right amount of retro glam.  They would make lovely bookends.
These silver plated birds from Pierre Deux offer a more traditional spin on the trend.  I also found some fabulous pheasant figurines from Pierre Deux that would be very happy in my kitchen somewhere.

Etsy.com is one of my favorite places to go when searching for interesting objects and birds seem to be a common muse for artists and crafters alike.  Here are some of my favorites:

This beautiful burlap bird pillow is from seller JolieMarche and I think it is just sweet enough to eat!  It would go with almost any style or fabric - I think it could even handle my rambunctious green and yellow striped sofa!

This dessert pedestal from burlap + blue would look lovely on my kitchen island topped with red velvet cupcakes or atop my dresser holding my diamonds and jewels!
The lacy blue bird bowl from PrinceDesignUK has left me beside myself with sheer cuteness.  Combining this sweet bird silhouette with lace?  Brilliant!

I am off to do some bird watching.

Sassy or Sweet?

This week I will be preparing for our trip north to visit family in the DC area, so I probably won't be blogging much and certainly won't have time to do so once we get there.  However, I will be taking pictures and compiling inspiration from places, people, food and shops I encounter while there.  (If you have any suggestions concerning museum exhibits, restaurants, etc. in DC, please let me know!!)
In the meantime, I am facing a dilemma.  The beach cottage in my last post was basically life changing and it has caused me to completely reconsider my inspiration for the nursery.  I had previously thought that the nursery should be light, bright, serene, and sophisticated, like the spaces shown below...

These nurseries are all fabulous and very sweet. I would be pleased to have any of them, but I think they are too somber and serious.  Perhaps they are more of what I want for my own bedroom and not so much what would be best for little miss Lily Grace.
So, I've had a total change of heart and I'm thinking Lilly Pulitzer meets Dorothy Draper.  This child is going to be sassy, there is no doubt about it - she doesn't have a choice - it's literally in our blood.  This nursery is going to need bright floral fabrics, vintage planters full of peonies, polka dots, (lots of) colorful French art, and a touch of Hollywood regency.  I'm thinking covered cornice boards with contrast detailing, loud drapery panels, and a scalloped crib skirt.  Here is my new inspiration guide. (Click to enlarge)

It is just so much happier than those other pictures.  It is still bright and light, but it's cheerful without being too kiddie.  The polka dot fabric is from http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/ for $3.95/yd, which I simply can't believe and will order a swatch before I commit.  I think I will use it in association with some pink (or green) piping to cover the rocking chair.  I found this fabulous idea (see below) on a blog I discovered called Living with Lindsay - this woman is truly amazing.  I simply can't believe the stuff she does!

She attached foam rubber to the rocking chair first using ribbon to add comfort for late night feedings.  Brilliant!  And it turned out so cute.  I can just see it in navy and white polka dot with the piping.  Yumm.  The two fabrics in the bottom left of my inspiration sheet are Amy Butler (worth checking out if you aren't familiar with her).  I think the floral with the blue/teal background will go on the cornice board/drapery panels.  I want to put some sort of trim within the cornice board like the picture below from La Dolce Vita.

The chevron and the pink and orange fabric will be used for the crib bumpers/skirt... probably.  I tend to change my mind.  A lot.  I found the Fauvist prints on http://www.allposters.com/ and discovered an artist that was previously unbeknownst to me: Raoul Dufy.  Yumm.  The pink and white faux zebra rug and the chandelier are both from Pottery Barn Teen and are on sale right now.  The glider is also from there, but not on sale and will probably not make the cut.  I found the Asian elephant lamp on Overstock.com and I have a perfect hand-me-down green and white striped nightstand that would proudly hold that lovely little lamp.  The knob is from Anthropologie and I will use it on a white dresser/changing table, which I have yet to find.  I'm officially in search of precious vintage planters and objets d'art that are retro and colorful.  I'm so excited... My vision is finally coming together.

So Inspired!

I don't usually post two days in a row and I don't have much to say today except that I am so inspired by a Balboa Island, CA home I discovered in my House Beautiful magazine this month!!  I haven't been this excited about a space in a very long time and it's just so good I had to share.  Enjoy and have a lovely weekend!

My Lust List

I have more than enough.  I have more than enough.  I have more than enough.  No matter how many times I tell myself this, there are just certain things I lust after with a persistent and fiery passion.  Here are a few of the things I need right now in no particular order.

I dream of a celebration designed by Ariella Chezar.  She is truly an artist, creating a distinct and intense ambiance with every tableau.  The beauty of her vignettes blur the line between wants and needs.  This reminds me...  a cheese table is a definite necessity for our upcoming nuptials.

I have been following knack studios in Greenville, SC ever since I worked with the founder's husband last fall.  Their offerings are whimsical and inspiring and seeing as how my search for the perfect dresser/changing table is failing miserably, I think a trip to their Pendleton St. store is in order.

John Robshaw bedding, period.  Oh how I long for you wrapped around me every night.  Sigh.  These linens are luxurious and beautiful with just the right amount of exotisme.  They come from far away places with a hip and relevant flair.  I think I might sleep better on John Robshaw linens... this might be a need.   I won't even comment on the crib sets...

Seaglass

Diggi Coral

Ink

I recently discovered Company C via my House Beautiful magazine this month.  They have an interesting selection of rugs and textiles worth checking out. Their April Blooms rug is precious and I think it would be perfect in the nursery.

Very cute, although it is in competition with the Boqueria Black and White rug from Designer's Guild.

As with most important decisions concerning things I don't need, it boils down to one questions: Do I want to be sassy or sweet?  Time will tell.
To help me decide, I will bathe in the sweet smells of rosemary, patchouli, and saltwater with Saipua's new handcrafted soap.  I honestly can't think of any better combination than those three.  The description reads, "A gentle body or hand soap with nori seaweed and crushed sea salt. Scented with rosemary and patchouli essential oils."  I must order this soap yesterday.

And last, Madeline Weinrib Original Handmade Textiles.  I may faint at the beauty of this stuff.  And if not, I will certainly faint at the price.  But they are like art on fabric ready to wrap around your favorite chair and worth every penny.  If only I could convince my roommate (aka fiance) of that.  They are the stuff of my dreams and I ooze with jealousy for the talent Mme. Weinrib possesses.  Her website is worth perusing, but in the meantime, here is the highlight reel.

Sigh... Tonight, I shall dream in ikat.

Peace Be With You

An inspiring mass on Sunday got me thinking about Peace.  It's a word that is so overused and an idea that has become almost fantastical.  Peace.  It seems so far from being real and viable that people have forgotten to strive for it at all.  The more I think about it, the more I realize that Peaceful is the best and most I can ever strive to be as a friend, a daughter, a sister, a wife, and, soon, a mother.  If I made peace my first priority in the morning, then everything else would follow.  Imagine the effect of peace in the lives of individuals... it might just cause more peaceful relationships and then who knows where Peace could go from there.  It is not an easy task, but it's a challenge I am willing to undertake.
I took this a step further in thinking about peaceful (and non-peaceful) people I know.  It seems that, nearly without exception, a person's home is a reflection of his or her peacefulness.  It is clear that it is the person who causes the lack of peace in the home and not the other way around, but I can't help but wonder about the effects of transforming the surroundings in order to begin transforming the person.  And so I leave you with spaces filled with peace and serenity.  May Peace be with you, now and always.
